When Your Best Friend is Also a Comm Major

I have been fortunate enough to have one of my best friends also be a communication major. We have lived together for the past two years and have grown so much as friends and also communication majors. We have noticed that some of our habits seem strange to our other roommates and especially other people. These are only a few examples of what happens when your best friend is also a communication major.

1. You celebrate each other’s successes and empathise with each other’s struggles
Since we both have had/will have to complete the same projects, tests and papers, we understand how big of a deal it is when the other finishes them. We can the relief with the other one. On the contrary, we understand the stress and the worries communication majors go through and sympathize with each other.
2. You impersonate your professors together
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. We understand that professors are caring people who we literally owe everything we know (comm related) to. With that being said, the ability to laugh while imitating professors helps to soften the blow of the 10 page paper they just assigned. Nobody will understand the humor of that like your communication major best friend.
3. You double your professional network
Need a contact for an internship? A project? An interview? Chances are your friend has had class with a girl whose boyfriend’s cousin’s best friend just happens to be the perfect person to talk to.
4. You keep each other up to date on the newest communication trends
You are always able to keep up with the best new accounts on Twitter, Pinterest, etc. because between the two of you, all of the best tips and social media are being utilized and shared with each other.
5. You edit each other’s writing
There is nobody better to edit your writing than a person who knows exactly what that professor is looking for. This applies to more than just papers for class. They are able to edit your resume and portfolio and give peer feedback you can trust.
6. You act as each other’s secretaries
There is always a person there to remind you of upcoming tests, projects and meetings. Someone to keep you on track is critical to being productive when Netflix is calling your name.
7. You have the best class schedules
Since there is another person to give advice on what teacher to take classes with and what electives to take, you usually end up with a pretty great schedule. Even though there are some classes that communication majors can’t avoid, at least you can work the rest of your schedule to accommodate those difficult classes, thanks to your friend’s input.
8. You're constantly discussing communication fails together
Companies are always facing new challenges. Some are not so successful in how they handle those crises. It is nice to have someone to discuss those failures with. Your "comm bestie" is the only one of your friends that could find those topics fun instead of "nerdy".
9. Shows like The Bachelor aren’t as “magical.”
We know more than the average person about everything that happens behind the scenes for interviews and the over-dramatized previews for the next episode of reality television. Knowing that there are a lot of prep and advertising strategies being used, it takes some of the “magic” away from reality TV. Therefore, when the rest of your friends are gushing over how cute the bachelor is, we are analyzing what goes on behind the scenes… and gushing over how cute the bachelor is.
10. You day dream about starting your own agency
You always joke about how it would be perfect for you two to open up your own communication agency. You already know each other well and exactly what each other’s strengths and weaknesses are. What could be better than having a best friend as a business partner?
