Super Bowl Commercials Through the Eyes of a Communication Student

The Super Bowl is known for three things, the football game, the half time show, and the commercials. As a communication major, my favorite part was the commercials. Airing an advertisement during the Super Bowl is a great investment for companies due to the amount of views that the Super Bowl brings in every year. Here is a look at five Super Bowl 2016 commercials.

1. Skittles: The Portrait

Two of my favorite things, Skittles and Steven Tyler. So I may be biased. With that aside, Skittles caught the attention of the older crowd with the front man of Aerosmith and humor to catch the rest. All I have to say is, how did this commercial get me to want to eat Skittles?

2. Mountain Dew Kickstart: PuppyMonkeyBaby

My first reaction: "wait…what? What does this have to do with Mountain Dew Kickstart?" Even though this commercial is obnoxious (and kind of weird?), it helps people remember the product…sort of.

3. Budweiser: Give a Damn

Budweiser always seems to capture the hearts of many with their heartwarming Clydesdale Super Bowl commercials, but this year they added a different approach. This commercial, which has Helen Mirren scolding drunk driving, was a great way for Budweiser to use their status to focus on a problem that is too common with alcohol consumption. Bravo Budweiser!

4. T-Mobile: Drop the Balls

T-Mobile quickly took advantage of Steve Harvey’s Miss Universe flub and used it to counter Verizon’s recent commercials by saying that Verizon made a mistake of their own in their ad. Nothing like using commercials to jab at one another! But good for Steve Harvey for bringing humor to his embarrassing situation.
